"Thespis" makes its Long Island debut this weekend

The Gilbert & Sullivan Light Opera Company of Long Island welcomes summer with “Thespis” or “The Gods Grown Old,” the tale of a struggling theater company. The production, a laugh-filled delight for all ages, features the acclaimed 25-piece Gilbert & Sullivan Light Opera Orchestra. The first collaboration between the legendary W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan, “Thespis” is known as the world’s most famous “lost opera,” since Sullivan’s score was lost after the show’s successful run in 1871-1872. Now Grammy-winning producer and composer Thomas Z. Shepard has written his ‘re-creation’ in Gilbert & Sullivan’s catchy, tuneful style.

Clybourne Park
The Tony Award-winning comedy “Clybourne Park” comes to the Nassau Community College stage, presented by the Department of Theatre and Dance. Bruce Norris’s sharp-witted, satirically funny look at American uneasiness examines the lives in one house through 50 years of societal changes. Act One takes place in 1959, as nervous community leaders anxiously try to stop the sale of a local home to a black family.  Act Two is set in the same house in the present day, as the now predominantly African American neighborhood battles to hold its ground in the face of gentrification.
