They brought the ballgame here

Fifth-grade students at the Clear Stream Avenue School got as close to a baseball game experience as they could on June 17, when the school set up a pint-sized version of Citi Field in its gymnasium.

Parents manned vending stations donated by On Time Entertainment of Valley Stream, and the students, decked out in hats and shirts donated by the Mets, watched a re-broadcasted game.

The event came on the heels of a two-month-long program that taught the students about America’s pastime. Only 16 of the 57 5th graders had ever been to a game, said Principal John Singleton, so to make the subject matter more real for them, staff decided to bring the stadium to the school.

“We tried to think of everything to make the experience meaningful for our students, who hail from diverse backgrounds,” said teacher Natalie Nelson.
