Town to hold bike locker lottery

Once again, Town of Hempstead officials are encouraging Bellmorites to buy a different kind of lottery ticket.

Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray, Councilwoman Angie Cullin, Councilman Gary Hudes and Town Clerk Nasrin Ahmad announced on March 14 that a drawing for the bicycle lockers at the Bellmore Long Island Rail Road station would be held early next month. They encouraged commuters to consider entering the lottery and traveling to the train station by bycycle to be more health-conscious and environmentally friendly.

“Any time you can leave the car in the driveway and use a clean means of transportation, it is a victory for our environment,”Murray said.

The lockers, which are located on the north side of the train station, are four feet tall, six feet long and 3¼ feet wide. Each locker fits a standard bicycle, protecting it from damage, theft and bad weather. 

Lottery winners keep their lockers for a year. There is a $40 key deposit, which is refunded at the end of the one-year lease. No sub-leasing is permitted.

One lottery “ticket” per household will be accepted. The application deadline is Friday, March 28, at 4 p.m. Winners will be randomly selected during a lottery drawing on Monday, April 7; selected residents may begin using the lockers that day.
