Two plays about Mothers

Although the attitudes and the laws have changed, Katherine hasn’t. Much of her anger is understandable; however, her blame is misplaced and she is far from a likable character.

Her tone is harsh and speech is clipped, no nonsense. She is a woman held together by anger, denial and self-pity. She claims that Andre wasn’t gay when he left Texas. She shows little self-restraint and even less manners, and thinks nothing of saying whatever she thinks, even though it’s insulting. Looking very much like Ethel Merman, Daly is hard, rarely softening except for a few moments with Bud or when she’s looking at old photos and diaries. By the end we see a pitiable woman, though still not one I liked.

Unlike Lena Younger who loves and supports her children no matter what they do, Katherine says she’s had Andre to give her love. There are all kinds of mothers and some of them are on Broadway. Happy Mothers Day!
