Fashioning a creative and charitable business

Ever since she was a little girl, Hewlett High School senior Hannah Burkhart always had a knack for creativity. Burkhart took her passion to another level when she established her own customized dream catcher business, It Wuz All a Dream.
Since establishing the company at the beginning of the school year, it has skyrocketed. Burkhart started out crafting one-of-a-kind dream catchers, decorated with charms and beads. Based on Native American beliefs it serves as a filter for dreams, letting in the positive ones and trapping the negative dreams in the webbing.
The business has expanded to key chains, bracelets, charms to hang on car mirrors, and larger dream catchers to hang on walls. She hand-makes her products by request, so she can provide her customers with exactly what they want. All of Burkhart’s dream catchers and accessories are complete with delicate stitching, a wide array of colors, and a plethora of charms entwined in the webs, from elephants to hamsas to Buddhas.
“Last year, during a family vacation in Paris I bought dream catcher bracelets from a group of gypsies,” said Burkhart, citing her inspiration to create her very own, unique business. “Although it started out as just a hobby, it is easy for me to pick up a ring and start weaving,” she continued.
Burkhart has always had an interest in design and fashion. She has taken classes at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York City, so she could learn more about the fashion industry and follow her own dreams. “I’ve always enjoyed taking art classes, whether in school or at FIT,” she said. “Making these dream catchers allows me to take my love for art in a totally different direction.”
