Veterans celebrated at Barnum Woods

Barnum Woods Elementary School fourth-graders paid tribute to family members and friends who served the nation at the annual Veteran’s Day ceremony on Nov. 10.

Ellen DiCocco, a fourth grade teacher, has organized the assembly featuring veterans and students’ family members alike for a decade. She said she created the program because she wanted the children to have an understanding of what makes a person a veteran.

“When I would ask the children what a veteran was they would be confused,” DiCocco said. “Now they know the branches of the armed forces and why we are celebrating, but most importantly they know to respect our veterans.”

The ceremony began with a student-led procession, with the youngsters singing and waving flags as the veteran guests walked to their seats on the school’s stage. The children began reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, in addition to singing the “Star Spangled Banner.”

Barnum Woods Principal Gregory Bottari expressed his appreciation to the veterans who visited the East Meadow school. He also reminded students why they should never forget the selfless contributions these men and women made to the country.

“It is our privilege to say thank you to all of our nation’s veterans,” he said. “The price for freedom is high and we can’t forget to thank those who are responsible for it.”

Students shared historical information, sang and recited poems during the assembly. They also paid tribute to family members who served in the American military who were unable to attend the event. Those who did stop by had the chance to look at a board DiCocco and the children created, which featured photos and stories about the veterans in the students’ families.

Bottari also took time to honor DiCocco by presenting her with a certificate of appreciation.
