Wantagh bank robber caught
By Michael Ganci

A homeless man was arrested for a string of robberies, including one in Wantagh on June 26.

According to police, at 11:18 a.m., Charles Riehl, 43, entered Astoria Savings Bank at 1149 Wantagh Ave. He allegedly walked up to the female teller and presented a note that demanded cash. After obtaining an unknown amount of money, he fled on foot in an unknown direction.

There were seven employees and two customers present during the robbery, cops said.

Police say that Riehl was connected to five other robberies, two in Oceanside, two in Copiague and one in West Babylon.

Riehl was charged with three counts of third-degree robbery and violation of parole. He was arraigned on June 28 at First District Court in Hempstead for the Nassau County charges. Suffolk County charged will be filed at a later date.
