Wantagh beats nemesis Garden City

Wantagh needed only 10 minutes to build a 4-0 lead on goals by sophomore Darcie Smith, Connolly, Sliwak, and Craig. Beshlian also made an early statement with point-blank saves off Katie Muldoon (hat trick) and Tara DeAngelo. “Grace has been lights-out all year,” Coyne said of Beshlian. “I can’t say enough about the way she’s played. She came up big again today.”

Muldoon scored twice to cut the margin in half, but Connolly answered to make it 5-2. After Haley O’Hanlon brought the Lady Trojans back within two with 1:01 to go in the half, a faceoff win by Cerasi led to Craig’s pivotal goal that regained the momentum for Wantagh. “Getting that goal before halftime was huge,” Coyne said.

Now the Lady Warriors (12-4) will try to win the first county crown in program history. Standing in the way is top-seeded Manhasset (15-1), which beat them in the 2013 semifinals and also in this spring’s regular-season meeting, 16-10.

“If we play the way we did today, we have a chance,” Connolly said.
