While the temperature is high the Nassau County Department of Health recommends drinking plenty of water while avoiding alcohol, increasing time spent in air conditioning, wearing light clothing and avoiding the sun at the hottest times of day. They also advise residents to check on relatives and friends, particularly the elderly and the young. Children and the elderly are at greater risk of heat related illness and immediate medical assistance should be sought for any individuals experiencing headache, dizziness, fatigue, anxiety, nausea, vomiting or a low pulse rate. Furthermore, children and pets should not be left in cars for any period of time. Even with cracked windows the internal temperature of a car can rise 20 degrees within the first ten minutes of being left in the sun. Children and pets left in this position are among those most at risk for heat stroke or death. For more information call the Nassau County Office of Emergency Management at (516) 573-9600.
