Hempstead Town Councilman Edward Ambrosino, a Republican from Valley Stream, pleaded guilty on Wednesday to a federal tax evasion charge and was ordered to pay restitution by a federal judge.

Ambrosino was arrested in 2017 and charged with eight counts of wire fraud, tax evasion, making and subscribing to false corporate tax returns, and failing to file a return or pay tax, according to the indictment.

He had been accused of diverting more than $800,000 in revenue from his former employer, an unnamed law firm, and failed to pay $250,000 in federal taxes.

Ambrosino said in court that he had knowingly omitted income on a tax form, and was ordered to pay restitution that could be up to $1 million to the state and federal governments.
