Cops: Local man robbed by pair who offered to help him move
A 21-year-old man was robbed and assaulted by two men who offered to help him move out of his Seaford home last week, according to the Nassau County Police Department.
Christian Dowd, 20, of Massapequa, and Patrick White, 39, of Bayville, were arrested by Nassau and Glen Cove police in Glen Cove on Aug. 21 at about 7 p.m. Three and a half hours earlier, police said, they had attempted to strangle the Seaford man in his Somerset Drive home before stealing cash and belongings.
Police said that Dowd and White were acquaintances of the victim, and that one of them offered to help him move. While he was packing sneakers into plastic containers, police said, Dowd and White began beating him.
According to court documents, Dowd and White showed the victim what appeared to be a black pistol while White hit him with a hard cast on his right arm. Police allege that the pair choked the victim with an extension cord, and then used the wire to tie up his hands and feet.
Dowd and White stole $800 cash from the victim’s pockets, court documents state. Police said that they also grabbed an iPhone and a pair of sneakers that was valued at $1,500 before fleeing the scene.
Still tied up, the victim maneuvered his way out of the home. Officials said that his neighbors called police, and he was taken to a local hospital.
Dowd and White were charged with first-degree burglary, first-degree robbery, second-degree strangulation and second-degree assault at their arraignment at First District Court in Hempstead on Aug. 22.
Joseph Ferri, White’s attorney, said that his client maintains his innocence.
“We think the charges are not supported by facts,” Ferri said. “In a lot of ways, the charges are nonsense. We are looking forward to him having his day in court so he can demonstrate, with objective evidence, that these charges are baseless.”
Miriam Sholder, a spokeswoman for Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas, did not have attorney information available for Dowd when the Herald went to press on Monday.
