Bomb scare at Bellmore LIRR station delays trains

Police deem area safe after investigating suspicious package

The bomb squad was called to the Long Island Railroad station in Bellmore on Tuesday night after a report of a suspicious package.

According to a Nassau County police spokeswoman, a report of a suspicious backpack or duffel bag in a trashcan at the station came in early in the evening, and the bomb squad responded at 7:53 p.m.

After establishing a perimeter and investigating, the area was eventually deemed safe.

According to local resident and EMS of the Nassau County Firemen’s Association, John Scalesi, trains were stopped at the Merrick station for two hours.

According to the LIRR Twitter feed, the train from Babylon to Penn Station was also delayed at the Seaford station because of the incident.
