“Have you seen these kids before?” Sandel Member Marge Capobianco asked the reporter.

“Not yet,” he replied.

“You’re in for a special treat,” she told him, and sat with an eager grin, waiting.

Then, a group of Covert Elementary students quietly streamed into the room “Okay, crispy chicken wings!” fifth grade teacher Mara Turchin instructed. The children took their positions.

They started with the Foxtrot, then the Tango and finally the Meringue. Around the room members could be heard whispering in hushed tones. “They’re beautiful aren’t they?” one said. “Boy they’re good,” another commented.

Capobianco, along with roughly 100 other Sandel members watched, clearly pleased with the performances. Then, they had the chance to join the children on the dance floor themselves.

The festivities were for Sandel’s May Birthday Brunch on May 12. Fifth grade teacher and ballroom dance instructor Chris Zappia said the purpose of his and Turchin’s program was to teach the children discipline and respect through dance.

Covert teachers Lisa Barbato and Joseph Gallina as well as their teacher assistants Brittaney Sinopoli, Amanda Estevez and Dana Mauro were also present to help.

“They’re very respectful, and they take it very seriously,” added Capobianco. “Plus, they’re very cute.”
