Disabled American Veterans commander receives award

Posted

Commander Frank Paz, a Vietnam War veteran, was presented with the Nassau County Distinguished Service for Veterans award on Aug. 12.

Every Friday night, Paz helps out with a support group for combat veterans. He said that the psychiatrists at Veterans Affairs hospitals are typically younger and do not understand what a combat veteran has been through.

Paz is also the commander of Disabled American Veterans Chapter 145, which helps pay veterans rent, sends vans to pick up homeless veterans who are sleeping in the streets and takes veterans on trips. On Aug. 8, the chapter took disabled veterans on a cruise around the Statue of Liberty. “We’re busy doing things literally all the time,” Paz said.
