Overcast Eagle Scout commemorates Seaford residents
A dedication ceremony was held on Dec. 17 to honor two Seaford residents who died last year. The service took place at the World War I memorial site near the Long Island Rail Road station in Seaford. Two benches and nameplates were dedicated in memory of Seaford Fire Department Fire Medic Rachel Hayden and Eagle Scout Richard Capo.
Hayden and Capo, both in their early 20’s, died last year unexpectedly due to medical conditions. Both families have been active in the community for a number of years, including in the Boy Scouts of America. Hayden’s family lives in Seaford and Capo has extended family in the hamlet.
For his Eagle project, Hayden’s brother, Patrick, restored and improved the memorial site. Following the completion of his project, and with the approval and support of the Seaford Wellness Council, a local fundraising effort took place which helped raise funds to replace a missing bench and for memorial plates to be placed on the new bench and on an existing bench.
Boy Scout Troops 239 and 581, Seaford Fire Department and Ladies Auxiliary members, Seaford Wellness Council and Seaford American Legion members and representatives from the Seaford Historical Society were in attendance at the ceremony.
