East Rockaway comes together to celebrate Stars & Stripes Festival

Posted

Community spirit and patriotism was in full force last week when East Rockaway hosted its annual Stars & Stripes Festival from Sept. 13 through 15.

Mayor Bruno Romano said the event was spectacular.

“The village board and I are delighted by the turnout at our Waterfront — it was the destination place on Thursday, Friday and Saturday,” Romano said. “We’re so excited that many local businesses were able to shine too as a result.”

About 2,000 people attended the three-day festival, and more than 100 people took the free shuttle service to avoid parking issues, Romano said, citing it as evidence that the event is growing in popularity with each passing year.

The event featured dozens of rides and games for residents of all ages to enjoy, including a merry go round, a super slide, a Sea Ray swinging ride, and a large swing. Prizes available included Pokémon and Disney stuffed animals, among others. In addition, Eat Gastropub served craft beers and there were many food trucks for patrons to enjoy, including Cheezy Pete’s, Good Eats Grill, Empanada Queen, the Lemon Ice King and Mr. Softee.

On Saturday, Romano and the Veterans of Foreign Wars color guard rang in the festivities with an opening ceremony. The Lazy Lobster, Wardon’s Deli and Reel supplied food and DJ Schreiber and the band Permission to Launch offered musical entertainment. The festivities concluded with a fireworks spectacle.

“East Rockaway’s Stars & Stripes Festival was a huge success,” Romano said.
