Long Beach firefighters searched the waters of Atlantic Beach on Thursday after receiving reports of an object falling from the sky, Fire Commissioner Scott Kemins said, initially believed to be a skydiver.
The Coast Guard joined the search, along with the Lawrence-Cedarhurst and Inwood fire departments and Nassau County police and aviation units, and determined that the object was two Mylar balloons.
The search began at around 6:40 p.m. and lasted for about an hour, Kemins said. No injuries were reported.
“Luckily, there was no victim,” Kemins said. “It ended up being a good training exercise. Any call, whether founded or unfounded, should be a learning experience.”
