Freeport man charged with 2016 fatal heroine overdose

Freeport man, 33-year-`old Anthony Howard was arrested on June 25 on Front Street at 6:45 p.m. following the investigation of a fatal heroine overdose that occurred last year. Narcotics Vice Squad detectives assisted the Freeport Police Department in investigating an overdose of a male in August 2016, which led to Howard’s arrest, police said. Also according to the police, Howard sold heroin on several dates in May and June.

Howard is charged with four counts of third degree criminal sale of controlled substance and six counts of third degree criminal possession of a controlled substance. Detectives recovered 29 grams heroin, an undisclosed amount of cocaine, pills believed to be painkillers, tramadol and hydrocodone, quinine and packaging materials.

Howard was arraigned on June 26 at First District Court in Hempstead and held on $10,000 bail. Howard then returned to court last Friday where his case was referred to Part 9 in Mineola and charged with dealing and possession of drugs; bail was denied. Defense attorney Michael Alber represents Howard and held for 3/$30,000.
