A two-year, $19 million transformation of the former Long Island American Water Corp. building into a Northwell Health Physicians Partners multi-specialty practice is close to completion.

The three-story, 23,000-square-foot structure, at 733 Sunrise Highway in Lynbrook, is 75 years old. It has been turned into a state-of-the-art medical office, which will house 70 employees — including 15 physicians with specialties ranging from family medicine to cardiology, gastroenterology, internal medicine and pulmonology. General, urological and vascular surgeons will also be on staff. Northwell is the largest private employer in the state, with roughly 66,000 employees, and a number of existing NHPP medicine practices will relocate to Lynbrook.

“Lynbrook is a great community,” Dr. Ira Nash, senior vice president and executive director of NHPP, told the Herald in a statement, “and the new facility allows Northwell Health to provide high-quality, integrated and coordinated care to this population in southwest Nassau County.”

According to a Northwell spokesman, the company is awaiting approval from county inspectors, and intends to open the facility in late May or early June.

Northwell sign-ed a 30-year lease with Simone Healthcare Development to invest in the two-year renovation of the building. The facility will be similar to a multi-specialty office Northwell opened last year in Patchogue.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at the facility on April 27. Lynbrook Mayor Alan Beach, members of the board of trustees and Chamber of Commerce President Carol Burak were among the attendees.

“Northwell Physician Partners will be an incredible asset to our village,” Beach said. “It’s great that we’re going to have doctors at a central location to benefit our residents.”

The family medicine practice will be staffed with two physicians in eight exam rooms, as well as two offices for consultation. The cardiology department and specialists in gastroenterology, internal medicine and pulmonology will share 14 patient rooms, six consultation rooms and two separate spaces to undertake stress tests, pulmonary function tests and electrocardiography tests, more commonly known as EKGs.

Additionally, there will be six physicians for on-site surgical services, including general, urological and vascular surgeons. The department will have 11 exam rooms, five consultation spaces and two procedure rooms.

In a news release announcing the upcoming opening of the building, Dr. Thomas McGinn, the deputy physician-in-chief and senior vice president of physician network operations for Northwell, expressed his excitement about the venture.

“This is a great day for Northwell and the community as we bring a total package of care conveniently into one new facility — everything from integrated, high-quality primary care to the latest advanced procedures,” McGinn said. “It’s all part of Northwell Health Physician Partners and powered by one of the nation’s most innovative, progressive health systems, which translates into all the best care that’s local, convenient, connected and seamlessly integrated.”

According to the release, the goal of the renovation was to preserve the character of the building while adding a reconfigured entrance and parking at the rear. The facility will also have new elevators and waiting areas.
