Oceanside Costco on track for Aug. 23 opening

After a month-long delay, the Oceanside Costco Wholesale location is officially set to open on Aug. 23. The 156,000 square foot Hampton Road bulk retail store is slated to feature the standard array of specialty departments and goods according to a release.

The warehouse will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony on opening day at 7:45 a.m. according to a spokeswoman for the store, and will house a gas station, bakery, deli, meat and produce sections, optometry and hearing aid departments, a food court and a beer, liquor and fine wine selection.

Oceanside residents have expressed mixed sentiments over the store. Some have raised concerns about possible traffic disruptions on Lawson Boulevard, while others have said they were excited at the prospect of a new Costco nearby.

Speaking to the Herald in June, County Legislator Denise Ford said the county would be closely monitoring the traffic situation when the store opens. “If there are any adjustments that need to be made, we will make them,” she said of traffic at the intersection of Lawson and Daly boulevards. She added that she requested a county police detail be posted there in the days after the store’s opening.

The store was originally scheduled to open on July 27, but was delayed. Up until this point, the nearest Costco was located roughly seven-miles west in Lawrence. Costco applied for tax exemptions through the Nassau County Industrial Development Agency in June 2014, but Nassau IDA Executive Director Joseph Kearney said in February that the application was never considered.
