Oceanside High School reschedules Homecoming for Oct. 19

In light of the tragic stabbing death of Oceanside High School senior Khaseen Morris during a brawl at a strip mall in Oceanside on Sept. 16, the school district has announced that Saturday’s Homecoming festivities have been postponed.

In an email sent to the community, Superintendent Dr. Phyllis Harrington said the Homecoming celebration would be scheduled for Oct. 19, with a parade at noon, followed by a football game against Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK.

The Sailors’ Sept. 28 game against Baldwin — originally slated to be their Homecoming contest and start at 2 p.m. — has been pushed to a 4 p.m. kickoff, Harrington said. The decision came as a way to honor Morris’s death in this difficult time.

“We immediately canceled the parade for this coming weekend, as that was an event we had complete control over,” Harrington said. “All of the other changes required cooperation from many and time to work out the details to avoid unintended consequences. Thanks to the willingness of so many, we were able to effect these changes.”
