Pedestrian struck on Sunrise Avenue; westbound traffic stopped

A pedestrian was struck by a car and seriously injured on Sunrise Highway in Seaford at about 3:30 on Tuesday afternoon. The Nassau County Police Department closed the road to through traffic, according to NCPD sources.

The pedestrian, 12, appeared to be talking on his cell phone when he crossed Sunrise against a red light, a witness said. He was struck by a 2008 Chevrolet Impala driven by an 88-year-old woman, who remained on the scene until police and ambulances arrived.

Neither the driver nor the victim were named.

The extent of the pedestrian's injuries was unknown. The NCPD Homicide Squad reported no criminality associated with the accident. Police performed a safety check of the vehicle at the scene; the investigation is ongoing.
