Nassau County police on Thursday identified the 43-year-old man shot by police on June 6 in Merrick.

According to a police news release, officers responded at 1:45 a.m. that Wednesday to a Murray Place home, where a “violent domestic disturbance” was reported. In the process of responding, a 43-year-old man was shot fatally in the chest.

Officers were on-scene throughout the day on Wednesday investigating the shooting, but police did not release the victim’s name, or any more details on the circumstances of the shooting.

Thursday, police identified the man as Alan Goyano.

According to published reports, neighbors reported seeing a woman on the street calling for help, and hearing gunshots once police responded.

On Tuesday, a police spokeswoman said that the department would not be releasing any more information on the incident. However, in a published interview Thursday, Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said that Goyano came at police armed with a shard of glass, and naked. In the Newsday interview, Ryder called the shooting "justified."
