Scout project is music to Baldwin’s ears

Three Baldwin girl scouts recently earned their Silver Award for installing a sensory music wall in the Baldwin Community Garden on Sept. 18. The Girl Scout’s Silver Award is the highest award a scout cadette can earn and gives young girl the chance to do “big things” and make their community a better place in the process, according to the Girls Scouts’ official website.

“We think that this wall will have many benefits, especially toward young children,” Arianna Rogers said. “It will relax them, make them happier to go outside, improve their social skills and get them interested in music.” A sensory music wall gives children the chance to have an up-close experience with music, and engages their sense of touch and hearing.

The three girls — Rogers, Maeri Baez and Juliana Carney — spent 50-plus hours of service on the wall, which included planning, sketching, measuring, cutting, fundraising, strategizing, constructing and installing. “We would like to thank Mrs. Mary [Zervos] and Mrs. Marilyn [Pignataro], the leaders of Troop 2144, for approving the project and giving us guidance,” Carney said.

Rita Cavanagh, chairwoman of the Baldwin Civic Association’s beautification committee, also helped the girls with the installation of the wall, which was mostly made of recycled materials. Baez said the project was “very important to us since we worked hard on it.”
