Seaford Legion honors first responders

Posted

March 15 was a night of honor at Seaford American Legion Post 1132.

Leaders of veterans’ organization celebrated the contributions of outstanding local law enforcement and firefighter personnel on Law and Order Night. Local folks flocked to the post, on Penatiquit Avenue, for the annual ceremony.

Nassau County Police Officer Richard Mosback, who works at the 7th Precinct in Seaford, was honored for his “quick thinking” during an emergency.  Seaford firefighters Thomas DeHaan, Peter Lochner, Robert O’Keefe, Jonathan Nicola and Ambulance Bureau Supervisor Scott DiPino were also acknowledged for what legion leaders described as life-saving actions.

Mosback said that a recent local domestic disturbance situation could have ended badly if he wasn’t properly trained to handle the situation. After talking to the suspect, Mosback took a knife from him and brought the man’s family to safety.

“I’m really honored to receive this award,” Mosback said. “It’s really just a testament to the genuine and good nature of the people of Seaford. It’s great knowing that our efforts are appreciated and recognized.”

The Seaford firefighters who were honored revived a man who was having a heart attack. Because of their swift response, Post Commander Bill Harms said, the man survived.

“This is important for us and important for the community,” Harms said of the event. “Part of our preamble states ‘of community, state and nation.’ We are here for Seaford.”

An audience of about 40 people watched while all six recipients were awarded plaques for their work. Veterans and residents alike saluted the honorees.

Members of the post also made a $250 donation to the Seaford Fire Department before the end of the ceremony. Families gathered for refreshments following the announcement.

“It’s a way for us to give back to the community and give appreciation for those who do service,” Charles Wroblewski, chaplain of the legion, said of Law and Order Night. “They are the ones who protect us.”
