‘Soaring to New Heights’ on Unity Day

Students in the East Meadow School District celebrated Unity Day on Oct. 23, a nationwide initiative that sends a message against bullying. The district’s theme for this year is “Soaring to New Heights,” which will be seen in an art installation at the Leon J. Campo Salisbury Center.

Students and faculty from across the district displayed by signing paper balloons, which will be compiled to form a mural. The installation, inspired by the popular animated film “Up,” will be assembled by students from the National Art Honor Societies at East Meadow High School and W.T. Clarke High School.

In addition to the district-wide art installation, schools throughout the district also celebrated Unity Day with a variety of other activities. At McVey Elementary School, for example, almost 800 students, teachers and parents participated in a Wellness Walk. Students carried signs, wore orange and marched with their peers in order to spread the Unity Day message.

At Parkway and Meadowbrook elementary schools, students signed their names to the paper balloons, created posters about kindness, and participated in lessons revolving around inclusion and acceptance.

District staff also joined in the spirit of Unity Day. The East Meadow High School guidance department wore orange T-shirts that said, “United. For kindness. For Acceptance.”

The “Soaring to New Heights” mural will be installed on Nov. 8 and will be displayed until late spring 2020.
