As the second nor'easter in less than a week hit Nassau County, village officials were preparing for the heavy wintry mix of snow and rain.

The village informed residents on its website Wednesday at about 7 p.m. of a major power outage due to the storm, noting that two of three PSEG Long Island feeder lines were out. “The village is working to get the power plant up and running to restore power, however it will take time,” the website post stated. “We appreciate your patience at this time. Updates will be made as new information comes in.”

The village wrote in an email that the outages are widespread and affecting multiple communities on the South Shore. There was no estimated time for restoration. “Please do not call the Police or Electric Departments for updates as we are handling many emergency calls,” the email said.

The Rockville Centre Fire Department did not respond to the Herald’s request for comment.

At 9:15 p.m., PSEG Long Island was reporting that 38,250 of its 1.1 million customers across Long Island and the Rockaways were without power. As of 9 p.m., the utility had restored 30,770 of the 70,294 customers affected by the storm.

“We are experiencing some scattered outages due to downed limbs, trees and wires,” said John O’Connell, PSEG’s vice president of transmission and distribution.

The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Warning for all of Nassau on Wednesday. Snow and a slushy mix of freezing rain began to fall at around 2 p.m. The weather service predicted that accumulations could reach four inches, with more to follow overnight. Wind gusts to 25 miles per hour were expected.

The Rockville Centre School District canceled classes and after school activities for Wednesday.
