Following the stabbing, police arrested two suspects, identified as Eber and Giovanni Yanes, 17- and 19-year-old brothers who live on Broadway in Lynbrook, authorities said. They were taken into custody at the scene and charged with second-degree assault, detectives said.
The victim, a resident of Far Rockaway, was rushed to South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside, where he was treated and released for the stab wound, police said. The fight took place in a three-family house on Norton Street at 12:55 a.m. on March 13, police said.
On Friday, March 4, at a house party on Bayswater Boulevard in Inwood, brothers Randy Gotterup, 16, of Doughty Boulevard, Bruce Gotterup, 27, of Haven Avenue in Valley Stream, and David Gotterup, 25, of Ormond Street in Hempstead, were arrested and charged with first-degree burglary, police said. They are accused of breaking into the house to settle an altercation during the party. They allegedly beat three men after Randy Gotterup got involved in a heated dispute with a guest in the house, left the party and summoned his brothers for help, officials said. One victim, a 25-year-old man, was taken to St. John's Episcopal Hospital, South Shore, in Far Rockaway, with a severe facial wound, police said.
According to Fourth Squad Detective Sgt. John Azzata, during the March 13 incident, the victim and his friend were attending a party on the first floor of the Norton Street home, while the two Yanes brothers were attending a party on the second floor.
The brothers, who were visiting their cousin, saw one of the guests from the other party urinating in the driveway, police said. They got into an argument with him and his friend interceded, police said. Eber Yanes then pulled out a serrated knife and plunged it into the victim's chest, detectives said. Police were then called and arrested the suspects. The knife was recovered by police.
"There were two different parties going on at the same house," said Detective Stephen Fitzpatrick of the Fourth Squad. "One of the [suspects] saw the guy [urinating] and he took offense to that. One thing escalated into another thing and a verbal argument turned physical."
The detective said that alcohol was being served at the house, and that the fight may have been alcohol-related. "The argument escalated into a fight over someone's conduct," Azzata added.
Commenting on the parties that ended in violence, Inspector Richard McGuire, commanding officer of the Fourth Precinct, said that more adult supervision is probably needed to prevent such occasions from getting out of hand. "They are responsible for the behavior of their guests," McGuire said. "Unfortunately, as you can see, there's not enough supervision."
McGuire also said that police are cracking down on anyone who serves alcoholic beverages to a minor - anyone under 21 - and that those who serve the alcohol will be held liable. Police said their aggressive initiative is designed to keep tabs on prom parties at the end of the school year, when alcohol is often served to minors.
"If police become aware of this, we will raid the party and then arrest any adults at the party who contributed to the minors' consumption of alcohol," McGuire said.
Police said that even if the parents or homeowners aren't present, they can still be held responsible and face charges.
Officials said they do not know whether alcohol was served to minors at the parties on March 4 and March 13.
