Unopposed Rockville Centre Board of Education candidates will serve community well

Posted

Liz Dion, a nine-year Board of Education member, has no opposition for her seat, and first-time candidate Kelly Barry is also running unopposed for the seat held by Mark Masin, who decided not to run for re-election after 15 years.

Dion, the board’s vice president, has a reputation for clearly articulating the board’s positions to the public, and is not afraid to speak her mind on topics that concern her. With Masin leaving, we believe her experience will help steer some of the newer board members.

Among those is Barry, a 15-year Rockville Centre resident who has worked at Hauppauge High School for the past 17 years.

She teaches U.S. history and government, college psychology and I.B. Theory of Knowledge to 11th- and 12th-graders. Her three children — ages 9, 8 and 6 — attend Floyd B. Watson Elementary School, where she serves as co-president of the Parent Teacher Association.

We believe Barry’s informed view as a teacher and a parent will bring a new perspective to the board, and complement second-year Trustees Tara Hackett and Susan McNulty, who also have young children in the district.

The Herald encourages the community to show support for both candidates.
