Local veterans, residents and elected officials gathered at the Doughboy Monument, near the Lynbrook Long Island Railroad station, last Saturday for a special Veterans Day ceremony at 11:11 a.m.

Henry Speicher, an Army veteran and the commander of American Legion Post 335, braved the cold November temperatures and addressed the audience. Lynbrook Mayor Alan Beach also spoke to honor the village’s veterans.

“On Veterans Day and every day, we honor and salute the courage, devotion and dedication that our veterans stand for,” Beach said. “We must always remember that our veterans, our proud men and women fought for — and continue to fight for — our America. They are our true heroes. “

Trustees Ann Marie Reardon, Hilary Becker and Mike Hawxhurst were also in attendance.

In addition to Speicher, other veterans at the ceremony included Bill Marinaccio, Michael Guglielmo, Joe O’Shaughnessy and members of the Western Long Island Detachment Marine Corps League.

William Schnaars, a marine who served in Iraq, and Kevin Canty, who served on a Navy task force in Afghanistan, laid a wreath near the Wall of Honor to commemorate those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
