Wantagh man in car involuntarily kills Freeport pedestrian

A Freeport man, Michael Patterson, 39, was killed on Jan. 24 at around noon after Brett Belferder, 31, from Wantagh, driving a 2017 Subaru Outback, collided him on the Meadowbrook State Parkway.

Authorities were investigating a separate one-car accident; at exit M2, Zeckendorf Boulevard interchange in Garden City, Nassau County when they were alerted of the second incident involving a 1992 Volvo and the Subaru.

Belferder was driving to work when he struck and killed Patterson, according to New York State Police State Trooper Daniel Ahlgrim. It is unclear why Patterson got out of his car or where he was headed.

A State Police vehicle and Nassau County Police vehicle were also struck, according to the news release. Ahlgrim wrote in an email that a trooper, who was seated in the stationary vehicle that was hit on the shoulder of the parkway, was treated for neck and back pain at Nassau University Medical Center before being released.

Ahlgrim also wrote that Belferder suffered facial and body injuries, was treated at Nassau University Medical Center and discharged on Jan. 25.

Efforts to contact the Patterson family were made, but a family friend said they’d like some privacy during this time.

It is not yet clear if the heavy rained played a role in the incident and officials are still investigating the circumstances surrounding. State Police ask in a news release that any witnesses to this collision contact the New York State Police headquarters at 631-756- 3300.
