Water main replacement work begins in Lynbrook

New York American Water began a project on Sept. 5 to replace 940 feet of an aging eight-inch water main from Scranton Avenue to Surry Commons, which was originally installed in 1930.

“Replacing aging infrastructure that has reached the end of its usefulness is a key component of providing quality water service and establishing a more resilient distribution system,” said John Kilpatrick, the engineering manager for NYAW.

NYAW will fund the project, which will cost $260,000. It is expected to take three weeks to complete. Work began along Piccadilly Downs, and the main will be replaced with new, eight-inch duct iron mains. Three fire hydrants along Piccadilly Downs will also be upgraded.

Work on the water main will coincide with Lynbrook’s road repaving schedule, which the village is paying for. “By coordinating these two projects, cost savings are achieved from only having to do the final paving one time,” Kilpatrick said. “Also, eliminating the old water mains under the newly paved road greatly reduces the likelihood of needing to dig into the new pavement to repair a main break.”
