John Santopolo, 65, a well-known 5-Towns endodontist and a leader of the business community. He was killed on Monday on his way to a Nassau County Dental Society meeting, when, after trying to cross Peninsula Boulevard at South Franklin Avenue in Hempstead, he was struck by an eastbound 2011 Honda Crossover at 6:20 p.m. He was hit again by another vehicle that did not stop, according to police. more
Former Rockville Centre Mayor Leonard Sandel died peacefully in his home on Saturday. A decorated World War II veteran who was always concerned about the well being of his community, Sandel was a man of action. He was a longtime public servant, an advocate for senior citizens, veterans causes and Jewish interests. He was devoted to his wife Lenore, of nearly 69 years, who predeceased him by eight months, and their daughter Susan. more

Mary Mancuso Robustello, a long-time Rockville Centre resident, died on Dec. 31. Born in Pelham, N.Y. on Jan. 29, 1924, she was married to local businessman Michael F. Robustello. The couple celebrated their 64th anniversary together, before his death on Aug. 27, 2010. more
Edward C. Dandignac, a former Rockville Centre resident who served as chief of the Rockville Centre Fire Department from 1977 to 1979, died on Nov. 28 in Austin, Texas at the age of 79. more
