In 1996, Hewlett House was a dilapidated farmhouse, long empty and fast rotting. The Hewlett-Woodmere School District, which owned it, planned to demolish the 300-year-old structure to make way for a parking lot. Then the Nassau Herald started reporting on the historic home’s plight.

“From the day that we’re diagnosed to the day … that we leave this Earth, we are survivors,” Geri Barish, a Baldwin resident and the executive director of the Hewlett House, told a group of about 30 Nassau County residents on May 11. They included cancer patients and their families who were at Hewlett House for South Nassau’s Cancer Survivors Day.

South High faculty softball game

Valley Stream South High School raised $2,500 for the Hewlett House on June 8 by hosting a faculty softball game. Three seniors organized the event and coached the two teams to raise money in honor of two South teachers who are currently battling breast cancer.

It was built in the rain and dedicated in the cold. In between, the new gazebo at Hewlett House has become a popular spot for those who are battling cancer.
