Jeff Kotcher, front row, third from the left, is bringing an adult hockey league to Valley Stream after getting approval from the village board on Feb. 4. Here he is pictured with his Panthers team at Barrett Park.

Kotcher, a 2007 graduate of South High School, is aiming to have anywhere from six to 10 teams in the league this year, which will be open to adults 18 and older. He said that Valley Stream residents will have first priority during registration, but the league, which has yet to be named, will be open to people from all communities.

He has reached out to people in Valley Stream and neighboring communities as a way to gauge interest in the league and said the response has been noting but positive.

Kotcher used to play with South Shore Roller Hockey, the league which most recently used the Valley Stream rink, about four years ago.

Although in its first year the league will only be open to adults, Kotcher is hopeful that the age range could be widened in the future. “I would love to start a youth league, as well, with multiple age groups,” he said. “Hopefully kids pass by the rink and say, ‘hey, mom and dad, I want to play there.’”

Barra, who has a hockey background, said he and other village officials are excited to see a new hockey league in Valley Stream. “We want this league to thrive,” he said, “and we want to make it another excellent feature for both the youth and adults.”
