New York State Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie visited Valley Stream and other areas of the 22nd Assembly District on Sept. 1, meeting with residents and business owners as part of an effort to get more familiar with the state and its population’s concerns.

Assemblywoman Michaelle Solages hosted the tour, which began at the Elmont Memorial Public Library and extended to Floral Park and Valley Stream. Heastie met with locals to discuss redevelopment at Belmont Park, met with South Floral Park Mayor Geoffrey Prime and Floral Park Mayor Thomas Tweedy, filled cannolis at Sapienza Bake Shop in Elmont while hearing about the challenges of being a small business owner in the state, spoke to an advocate for Long Island bus riders about the negative impact of bus privatization, visited the Cornell Ruffian Equine Center next to the Belmont Racetrack, and concluded the trip with a meet-and-greet with small business owners at Chef B’s in Valley Stream, a Trinidadian-owned restaurant.

Solages said the visit went well. “I was excited when I received notice that Speaker Heastie planned to visit the 22nd Assembly District, which I represent,” she said. “This was a great opportunity for local community leaders and business owners in the 22 nd Assembly District to not only meet Speaker Heastie, but to also express to him personally their perspectives, concerns, and ideas.”
