The World Mission Society Church of God is holding an ice cream social fundraiser this Sunday, with all of the proceeds going to the family. Katyusca Abreu, a spokeswoman for the church, said that even though the Pandays aren’t members, helping others in need on Long Island is the church’s mission. “Whenever things like this happen,” she said, “we do stuff to help the community.”

Steele said that as word of the fire spread throughout Wheeler Avenue School, the district’s social worker visited the boy’s class to let his peers know that everyone was safe. She added that the school would do its part to support the family throughout this ordeal.

The donations that have come in already have warmed Steele’s heart, she said, adding that the family is appreciative. “You name it, people are coming through with it,” she said. “It’s been overwhelming. They are really rallying together as a community.”
