Firefighters tended to a blaze at a Fir Street home just after midnight on Feb. 24.

Officials said no one was injured, and that a woman was able to escape the house when she noticed a fire started on the second floor. Firefighters later rescued her dog from the basement.

According to Gene O’Brien, the second assistant chief for the Valley Stream Fire Department, the woman noticed that the power went out, so she unsuccessfully tried to reset the breakers. He said she then went back up to the second story of her house and noticed the flames.

“She got out no problem,” O’Brien said.

It took firefighters about an hour to extinguish the fire, but when they were finished there was “extensive fire damage” to the second story, according to O’Brien. The first floor and the basement had smoke and water damage.
