Evans challenged by Farrell in District 13

Like many of her colleagues, Evans said that Common Core is a good idea that was executed poorly. She said the new standards should have be implemented grade-by-grade, with tests that matched the lessons being taught. The concerns of a sometimes outraged public, she said, are valid.

Evans is pleased that the district has been able to offer workshops to parents to help them better understand the new curriculum.

In her role on the board, Evans describes herself as the “devil’s advocate.” She said every issue should be looked at from numerous perspectives before a decision is made. “I like to ask questions,” she said. “I’m going to do my best to weigh every situation on its merits and consider what is in the best interests of the students of Valley Stream 13 and keep in mind the taxpayers of Valley Stream 13.”

Since being elected to the board, this is her first time facing opposition. Evans said she hopes continue contributing to the decision-making process for the next three years.

PATRICIA FARRELL

No stranger to community service, Patricia Farrell is looking to take the next step. The long-time PTA leader is running for a seat on the District 13 Board of Education, challenging three-term incumbent Debra Evans.

Farrell, a 15-year resident of the district, ran for the first time last year for an open seat, losing out to friend Toni Pomerantz. “I am interested in getting on the board,” Farrell said, “so I figured I’d give it another shot.”

She is a former PTA president at the Wheeler Avenue School, and current treasurer of the Central/Memorial PTSA, as well as corresponding secretary for the Valley Stream Council of PTAs. She also is an assistant director for the Nassau Region PTA and treasurer of the District 13 Educational Foundation.
