The Year of the Rooster

The Henry Waldinger Memorial Library will celebrate Chinese New Year on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 2:00 p.m.  The Valley Stream South High School Cultural Society will perform various Chinese dances such as the Lion Dance, Ribbon Dance, and Chinese Yo-Yo. The Queen of Katwe

Elmont Memorial Library will screen the inspirational movie “The Queen of Katwe” on Feb. 7 at 2pm. Lupita Nyong’o stars as Phiona Mutesi, a young girl from the slums of Uganda, who becomes an international chess prodigy. Based on a true story, the movie proves anything is possible if you believe.

Willem De Kooning Art Workshop

On Tuesday, February 7, 2017, from 6:00-8:00 p.m., the Henry Waldinger Memorial Library will be holding an art workshop for students grades 5 through 12.  With a special grant from the Willem De Koonig Foundation, the students will create individual and group paintings in the De Koonig style.  All materials will be provided, but students are reminded to dress to paint. Deep in the woods

Families can join Red Yarn (aka Andy Furgeson) on an engaging adventure on the Long Island Children’s Museum in Garden City, Sunday, Feb. 5., 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. He brings American folklore to life, combining folksongs and puppetry as he shares a tale of some deep woods, where everyone will meet up with forest animals. Rockin’ to the beat

Chart-topping original rock ‘n rollers get together for an evening of memorable music for a new installment of “The History of American Rock and Roll,” at the Madison Theatre, Saturday, Feb. 4.
