Fire damages Ocean Ave. storefronts

Several local fire departments fought a fire for more than an hour at a row of storefronts on Ocean Avenue early Sunday morning.

Charlie Brocher, chief of the Valley Stream Fire Department, said that a barbershop was the focus of the fire, while two adjacent stores — AL Mini Market and Yuderki’s Beauty Salon — incurred smoke damage, with some minimal fire damage. No injuries were reported.

The Elmont, Lynbrook, and Malverne fire departments also responded to the scene when the call came in at 12:50 a.m., and the Hewlett-Woodmere Fire Department was on standby, Brocher said.

The fire was deemed under control after an hour and a half, said Brocher, but members of the departments remained at the scene to assist with the investigation. The Nassau County Fire Marshal is investigating the cause.
