Advance Formal Wear

234 Sunrise Highway, Rockville Centre

Certainly a landmark in Rockville Centre, Advance Formal Wear opened in the early 1940s. Brian Upton took ownership two years ago, and his brother, Kevin, now manages the store. While in school, Brian had worked for the previous owner, learning all aspects of the business. Shortly after he took over, a car crash damaged the store, so he did a complete renovation.

Whether you need a tuxedo for a wedding, an up-to-date business suit for a job interview, a shirt, tie, cuff links, studs, or gifts for groomsmen, Advance Formal Wear can provide. They do both rentals and sales. Since everyone who works there is a tailor, getting the best fit is never an issue. They even do same-day alterations.

Sizes run the gamut. You’ll find items to fit a three-year-old, to a man’s size 70 Long. And the expert fitters available will make sure you make the right choice.

“For a wedding, it’s all about the photographs,” said Kevin Upton. “You want to look as good as possible.”  He suggests the most flattering — the classic look — a black tuxedo with black bow tie. Vest or cummerbund? “It depends on the man’s size. If he’s a large man, a vest is recommended.”

Advance Formal Wear has created a comprehensive website that not only shows photos of their tuxedos and suits, but also answers all questions, from formal etiquette to how to tie different knots. It is basically a “Formal Wear 101” course.

For example, what is appropriate to wear if an invitation reads, “Black Tie, Black Tie Optional, Black Tie Invited, or White Tie?” How should the jacket and trousers fit? Who should wear tuxedos at various types of weddings? In a wedding party, should everyone wear the same tuxedo and accessories (vests, ties, etc.)? As far as the colors, they recommend certain ones for different venues, seasons, and time of the day or night. They answer questions about tuxedo arrangements, fittings, rental pickups and returns.

Everything offered is in stock. Personalized service is a guarantee. The store is open seven days a week. Hours are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday.
