Girl Scouts donate gift boxes for holidays

The Valley Stream Girl Scouts gathered at the Valley Stream American Legion hall on Nov. 13 to fill boxes with gift items and wrap them for children around the world.

The project, called Operation Christmas Child, is run by Samaritan’s Purse, an evangelical Christian humanitarian organization, according to its website. Shoeboxes are filled with items useful for a child in need, but also contain toys. Items are selected according to age and gender. The only charge is the $7 for shipping that Samaritan’s Purse requires.

The girls filled more than 130 boxes, according to Girl Scout leaders Liz Stevens.

“We are so proud of all of our girls for contributing to this worthy cause,” she said.
