Gray skies no match for green pride
Susan Grieco/Herald
The Senior Hornets team takes the field for the Homecoming game.

The Green Hornets youth football league hosted its annual Homecoming celebration last Sunday at Firemen’s Field. All six teams played and four were victorious — Pee Wee White, Midgets, Pony Green and Pony White.

All games were played on the Bob Hawkey Memorial Football Field, named for the legendary Green Hornets coach.

The Valley Stream Junior Fire Department had a color guard for two of the games, and the cheerleaders performed halftime routines during the senior game.

There was a classic car show and numerous raffles which included football tickets but not for the Green Hornets, for the Jets and Giants.

Sharon Daly, president of the league, said that while the weather wasn’t great on Sunday, there was still a solid crowd who came out to cheer the players. Also on hand was Town Councilman Jim Darcy, of Valley Stream, a former Green Hornet himself.
