Green Hornets skill and drill

The Hornets have five teams broken up by age groups: the Pee Wees are made up of 7 and 8 year olds, the Midgets are 9 and 10, two Pony teams consist of 11 and 12 year olds, and the varsity team is for 13-year-old players.

Mike Sharkey, coach of the Pee Wees, played in the league in the 1970s and now coaches his 8-year-old son. He said the league teaches discipline and positive life lessons that he still uses as an adult.

Sharkey, who played college football, credits the Hornets for his solid football pedigree. He said he was glad to give back to the league that helped him get his start. “Once you’re a Hornet,” he said, “you’re always a Hornet.”

There are more than 140 players already signed up, Hawkey Jr. said, and registration is open until Aug. 5. The 10-game regular season kicks off on Sept. 8. For more information, visit www.greenhornets.hypermart.net.
