Honoring top senior male athletes

Now that the 2012-13 school year is over, it’s time to unveil the Herald’s Top 20 male athletes, listed alphabetically, nominated by readers.

Benji Alonge (Elmont)
Nassau’s leading goal scorer on the soccer pitch in 2011 with 24, the SUNY-Alfred bound Alonge ranked added 15 more last fall while helping the Spartans to the Conference AA-3 conference title with a record of 10-0-2. After a pair of four-goal games and two hat tricks as a junior, he opened his senior campaign with a hat trick.

Giancarlo Carvalho (East Meadow)
The football program at East Meadow is known for producing top linemen. Carvalho, a major part of the Jets’ 2011 Conference I championship team, kept up the tradition by winning the Martone Award given to Nassau’s top lineman. He’s the fifth player in school history to receive the honor. The 6-2, 280-pound All-Long Island selection is headed to LIU Post.

John Fogarty (Clarke)
In helping the Rams to their first Nassau Class A baseball championship since 2009, Fogarty gave opposing pitchers fits. The three-year starting center fielder and All-State selection capped his high school career with a hefty .470 batting average, four home runs, 39 RBIs, and 18 steals. He drove in 18 runs in the playoffs and is set to attend Adelphi.

James Forkin (Long Beach)
Despite being the focus of opposing defenses on the football and lacrosse fields, Forkin thrived and led the Marines to the playoffs in both sports. As the primary ball-carrier of the pigskin, Forkin amassed 11 touchdowns including a record six in one game. But it’s with a lacrosse stick in his hand where he’s really lethal. The Syracuse-bound attack/midfielder scored 57 goals.

Tyler Fredericks (Lawrence)
An unstoppable force as a running back and receiver during his four varsity seasons on the gridiron, Fredericks totaled 4,163 yards and scored 66 touchdowns while helping Lawrence to three county championships and one Long Island crown. Bound for Stony Brook, the 6-1, 215-pound Fredericks had more than 2,000 total yards in 2012 and reached the end zone 22 times.
