Even on a gloomy day, about 260 runners took part in the annual Spartan 5K race at Valley Stream North High School the morning of March 16. The race began at the school track and continued through the streets of Franklin Square before returning to North.

According to Mike Frazer, the school’s athletic director and one of the event’s coordinators, said 225 runners finished the race. At 16 minutes and 17 seconds, Ryan Cooney, a senior at Massapequa High School, was the first to cross the finish line. North’s own Gabriela Andrade, a freshman, won the women’s division.

North High softball, basketball and soccer coach Dan Tronolone and track and kickline coach Nathalie Miranda were the men’s and women’s winners, respectively, in the faculty and staff division.

The race raised money for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Frazer said North will be making a donation of at least $3,000.
