Interim Shaw Ave. principal appointed

After tendering her resignation about a month ago, Principal Amy Pernick’s last day at Shaw Avenue Elementary School will be Friday, Nov. 20.

“She will be missed,” said PTA President Angela Worrell-Laurent.

The District 30 Board of Education appointed Dr. Bridgette Wilson as the interim principal until the end of the school year, while the board seeks a permanent replacement for Pernick, who tendered her resignation a month ago.

Wilson began working with Pernick this week to get acquainted with the school, and will officially take over on Monday.

Wilson has been a school administrator for the past 15 years, working in the Connetquot and Central Islip school districts as an elementary school principal. Most recently, she worked as director of human resources in the Amityville School District. She also has a background in elementary and adult education, as well as multicultural education, English Language Learner education, and special education, said Superintendent Nicholas Stirling, adding that her background “definitely gives her a broad spectrum of experiences that will serve her well in this district.”

Pernick was the school’s assistant principal in 2013 when she was promoted to principal. It was a much-celebrated moment, because it had been 43 years since a principal was promoted from within the school. Pernick began her career as a substitute teacher in the district 21 years ago. She was then hired as a third-grade teacher, and also taught grades 4, 5 and 6 over the next 12 years.

Pernick took a position in the Hewlett-Woodmere school district, according to Stirling.
