Valley Stream Little League opens 56th season

With perfect weather for baseball, the first pitches were thrown in the Valley Stream Little League’s 56th season last Saturday. Under sunny skies and with temperatures in the 60s, the league held its Opening Day ceremony at Firemen’s Field with several hundred players, coaches and parents in attendance.

Steve Baez, in his first year as president, said it was the first time Mother Nature has cooperated for the Little League’s opener in several years. He said he is looking forward to a safe and enjoyable season, while hoping for continued good weather. Baez also thanked outgoing President Steve Dignam, who held the post for five years. During that time, the league picked up four championship banners.

Ariana Picillo sang the National Anthem, and Mayor Ed Fare threw out the first softball and baseball pitches of the season. After the ceremony, players got to enjoy a popular baseball treat — hot dogs.

There are about 250 players among 20 teams this year. Games started right after the ceremony and will continue through Father’s Day weekend. The league’s season ends with Trophy Day on June 14.
