Nassau County Police arrested a California man and charged him with second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of a man at an East Hawthorne Avenue home in Valley Stream last Friday.

Deon O. Ewers, 50, the estranged husband of a woman who lived in the home, was arrested on Saturday in Oceanside. Police said that Ewers, of Los Angeles, shot a 34-year-old man at 6:53 a.m. on Nov. 6 after an argument. Ewers’s estranged wife and 14-year-old son live at the home and were there at the time of the shooting, but were not injured, police said.

Police said they believed the victim and Ewers’s estranged wife were in a relationship. Ewers had arrived in New York the night before the shooting.

The victim suffered multiple gunshot wounds from a semi-automatic handgun. He was taken to South Nassau Communities Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 8:04 a.m. Police have not provided his identity.

Ewers was arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead on Sunday.
